The second and final new job class for Final Fantasy XIV‘s upcoming Stormblood expansion has been announced. Unveiled during last weekend’s Fan Festival in Frankfurt, Germany, game director and producer Naoki Yoshida took to the stage to showcase Samurai, a melee DPS class that utilizes the iconic warrior’s katana as its main method of attack. Like all new jobs released with 2015’s Heavensward expansion, Samurai won’t have an associated class to level, and will start at level 50, although this is, for now, a tentative jumping off point, so it’s not set in stone as of yet.
Recommended VideosSamurai will join Red Mage – another DPS class – as Stormblood‘s complete offering of new roles to shake up party compositions, one less than the three introduced with Heavensward, a decision, Yoshida said, was made due to the huge development time it takes to create entirely new classes, with the director preferring to focus on balancing the three existing Tank and Healer roles instead of introducing more.
Alongside the above, a new, full-length trailer was shown, which revealed that players will not just be liberating one Garlean-oppressed region, but two. Ala Mhigo and the Eastern-themed Doma will make up the new areas of the expansion, the latter of which received much of the focus at the festival.
Announced at last year’s Fan Festival in Las Vegas, Stormblood launches June 20 for PlayStation 4 and PC. Much to the applause of fans, PlayStation 3 support for the MMO is being dropped for the add-on, so you’ll want to take advantage of the free upgrade campaign currently running for Final Fantasy XIV. You will, of course, still need to buy a PlayStation 4.
